After purchasing a Colour Kit you'll immediately receive an email from us asking about your hair goals, your previous hair history (any colour or bleach you've had done), photos of your current hair and inspiration photos for what you'd like to achieve. If you're a returning customer, The Lab will have all your previous formulas on file for you!

For clients looking for something new, our master colourist will assess all of the above information and create your custom formula. Our team will be in-touch during your colour formulation if a deeper consultation is required.

Step one

Prep

Each colour kit comes with custom instructions specific to your formula. To begin, place a towel around your neck and put on gloves. We suggest wearing a top that is easily removable once your colour is applied (button down or zip front top) & clothing you don't mind staining.

Step two

Mix Your forumula

Pour the bottle labeled "Developer" into the jar labeled "Custom Colour" and mix well until fully incorporated (or close jar and shake vigorously). This should result in a creamy consistency.

Step three

Colour Your Roots

Using the fine tip of a colour brush, section your hair into halves down the middle of your scalp and apply the colour mixture to the root area only. From there divid your hair into 1/4-1/2” thick sections horizontaly, starting at the centre part and working towards the ear. Repeat steps on both sides of your head.

Step four

Don't Forget The Back

Now that you have completed the sides of your hair we will move onto the back. Starting at the crown/top of the head take 1/4-1/2” thick horizontal sections across the back - working down towards the neck.

Step five

Colour Your Lengths

This step only applies if you are also applying colour to your lengths - if you are only applying your root colour skip to step 6. Repeat steps 1-4 (mix developer into jar labeled custom colour ends). Only apply the colour below the root and to the tips of your hair.

Step six

Clear Your Skin

Wipe the hairline with a cloth and warm water to avoid staining the skin. The longer the hair colour sits the more it will stain. Any staining on the skin will come off naturally when showering or washing your face.

Step seven

Process

Let your hair colour process on your roots/ends for 30 minutes. Rinse the colour out using the shampoo & conditioner packet provided for you in your Colour Kit.

This Colour Kit comes sealed for your convenience. It will stay active for 3 months before expiring when left unopened. Once finished, seal the container and dispose of it. Do not keep any colour that has been exposed to air as it will no longer be active.
